VAVerifyCare began in a waiting room. Don "Corky" Mitchell — a disabled United States Air Force veteran, retired Major, and former Special Operations helicopter pilot — was driving long distances for head and neck cancer treatment and trying to get reimbursed for the travel he was entitled to.
The care was excellent. The paperwork was not. Filing a travel voucher online often meant driving back to the medical facility to get proof of attendance, scanning that document, then adding it as an attachment to the online voucher, and calling to see if that was correct. Every one of those steps existed to establish a single fact the clinic already knew: he had shown up.
That is the entire premise of VAVC. Attendance is the one fact travel reimbursement depends on, and the front desk records it the moment a veteran checks in. Capture it once, in the non-clinical part of the record, compute the amount from addresses already on file, and notify every office that needs to know — automatically.
Major Mitchell flew Special Operations helicopters for the U.S. Air Force and was the second African American in history to fly the aircraft his unit operated. That career was built on checklists, crew coordination, and removing steps that add risk without adding value — the same discipline behind this platform. Today he is CEO of The Concept Factory, LLC, a Virginia company he founded as the parent for VAVerifyCare and future ventures.
He is also still a patient in the VA system. Every design decision in VAVC is measured against a simple test: does it reduce the number of times a veteran in treatment has to ask someone for help getting paid back?
